Family Appeals for Help After 8 Members Die in School Bus Crash

A family that lost eight members in a tragic road accident on Wednesday, May 17, appealed for financial support to aid in burial arrangements. 

In a statement, the Kondengee Family urged members of the public to support them with monetary donations as they prepare for the sendoff of their loved ones. 

“Request for support; In expression of solidarity with Kondengee Family following the demise of 8 members in a tragic road carnage on 05/05/2023,” read part of the family statement.

This followed an accident that occurred on May 5, where 8 people died in a crash along the Kisumu-Homa Bay Road, near Kendu Bay.

Sikika Road Safety, a popular campaigner on Facebook, shared the post, urging its followers to support the Kondengee family in raising funds towards the burial arrangements. 

“The Kondengee Family is organizing for mass funeral, it's for this reason the family are kindly requesting you to support them financially in order to enable them do a proper send off for their family members,” read part of the Sikika Road Safety statement. 

Sikika Road Safety is a campaign to create awareness to all road users in an attempt to reduce road accidents.

The accident occurred when the driver of the school bus ferrying mourners to a funeral failed to negotiate a corner and landed in a ditch.

The passengers were from Nyakach, Kisumu County and were heading to Karachuonyo for the last respect of a relative.

Nyanza regional traffic boss Joseph Nganga confirmed the incident, adding that the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate the Pala junction. 

According to a police report, the bus had 39 passengers, out of which 32 were survived with varying degrees of injuries while 7 died on the spot.

Nganga stated that police officers arrived at the scene on time and with help of members of the public, they managed to take the injured victims to local hospitals for medical attention.

“Majority had slight injuries with a few having serious injuries but they were taken to local hospitals for treatment,” stated Nganga.

The bodies of the seven victims were taken to Gendia Mission Hospital mortuary for postmortem. 

One of the survivors died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital, raising the death toll to 8.

The wreckage of the bus that was involved in the accident was towed to Kendu Bay police station as police continue with their investigations.  

Burial of all the 8 family members was scheduled to take place on May, 26, 2023.

According to the National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA), deaths recorded between January and December 13, 2022, increased to 4432 from 4271 in the same period in 2021.
