CCTV footage of four suspects robbing a hotel in Lodwar, Turkana County, on Wednesday, May 17, emerged two days after the incident.
In the footage shared on Friday, May 19, by a local news outlet in Lodwar, the robbers were filmed arriving at the hotel 27 minutes past 9 pm.
One of the robbers was then captured, firing at the customers while the other three stormed into the cashier's office.
Upon opening fire, some customers scampered through the hotel's kitchen door as they exited the building.
Those left in the hotel stayed on the ground during the incident, which lasted nearly three minutes.
One of the gunmen was also captured struggling with the gun, which reportedly malfunctioned.
The malfunctioning was also collaborated by the police report - OB NO. 83/17/05/2023 - which indicated that the gun developed a stoppage
"They took approximately Ksh20,000, which was the day's sales, then the robbers tried to escape using a motorbike which failed to ignite. Bodaboda riders at the adjacent stage started shouting for help.
"They also tried to fire one round in the air to scare them away but their firearm developed a stoppage," read the incident report in part.
Police indicated that onlookers attacked the armed robbers after they realised the gun was not working.
"Furious members of the public overpowered police and lynched the three suspects. At the scene, three bullet heads, three spent cartridges and one live bullet of 7.62mm special were recovered.
"Also, a numberless motorcycle suspected to be used by the suspects was also recovered," read the report in part.
During the incident, one of the suspects escaped. The bodies of his colleagues were taken to the Lodwar County Referral Hospital morgue.
