The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Road Safety Manager, Samuel Musumba on Friday, May 19 listed measures the authority had put in place to tame road carnage.
Musumba noted that the major cause of accidents in the country was due to unfit drivers.
"The drivers are the biggest contributors to accidents on our road that is why our campaign focused more on educating them," Musumba revealed.
Musumba revealed that NTSA was keen on encouraging the drivers to join Saccos which will create room for more accountability and easier implementation of regulations.
He explained that NTSA was working on awareness campaigns to ensure that the drivers are given the proper education on how to operate on the road.
According to Musumba, the method had proven effective in the past as fewer fatalities were reported.
Meanwhile, he warned rogue drivers caught breaking the rules adding that they will be dealt with alone as per the law.
However, the Kenya Transport Rescue Mission (KTRM) was unimpressed by the tactic as it noted that drivers brushed through driving school before taking to the road, risking the lives of innocent citizens
"You will find a vehicle on the road with all the right paperwork but it keeps breaking down, our question is, are any of these vehicles inspected through the right procedure," posed KTRM Secretary Stephen Ndolo.
This came days after several accidents were reported across the country leading to the loss of several lives.
Kenyans called upon Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to tighten the grip on the sector to restore sanity and save lives.
In response, Murkomen announced a nationwide crackdown in conjunction with NTSA to inspect all vehicles and their drivers.
"I direct the immediate enforcement of anti-rolling bars, installation of seatbelts, and proper anchorage of seats on all PSVs including matatus, omnibuses, and buses," the CS added.
NTSA on Monday, May 8 launched the crackdown to apprehend all motorists violating Traffic Laws and regulations.
