Nairobi School on Thursday, May 25, donated 10 acres of land to facilitate President William Ruto’s climate change project across the country.

Speaking during a state visit at the school, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu stated that the decision was reached after a  meeting with the leaders of the institution who pledged their support to the president.

Machogu explained that the land will be used for a tree-planting drive that will supply seedlings across Nairobi and other parts of the country.

He stated that starting the following week, the ministry would provide one million tree seedlings to the institution that will later cushion the nation from the effects of climate change.

“They said that because of the programme and knowing the diverse effects of climate change has done to our country and globally, they are going to commit the 10 acres in growing seedlings that they will be able to supply to Nairobi and other parts of the country

“Starting next week, we will provide one million seedlings to the school and I will report back to you, your excellency on of that matter. It is now part of our performance contract,” Machogu stated.

Further, Machogu stated that the teachers at the institution had unanimously supported the 3 per cent housing fund noting that it was their benefit.

"They indicated to me that they are in support of your government of providing housing not only in Nairobi but in the entire country. They are indeed the beneficiaries of the programme because our teachers are in every part of this country.

"I think if there was anyone to complain about the levy, it would be the employer because our teachers will be able to solve one of the serious problems we have that they stay in houses that are not good enough," Machogu added.

At the same time, Ruto promised to help the school continue with its development to meet the needs of the students.

With the condition that the school admits more students, Ruto pledged to mobilise others to build the school’s laboratory, a dormitory and more classrooms.

“I will give Ksh100 million for the construction of 12 classrooms and I will look for friends so that we can also build the dormitories that I have been told you need.

“But you have to promise that you will accommodate 100 more students here and they should come from all parts of the country so that we can grow one society,”  Ruto stated.

Soon after assuming office, Ruto embarked on a mission of protecting the environment, promising to oversee the planting of over 10 million trees in 10 years.
