Nakuru City on Monday, May 29, witnessed heightened security following the arraignment of former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga in court.

In response to chaotic scenes witnessed on Thursday, May 25, at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) when Maina Njenga was summoned for questioning, the police placed pre-cautionary measures to avert any possible mishaps.

The tight security included the establishment of crowd control security measures which were meant to prevent or contain crowds in a specific area.

Anti-riot police officers erected barricades to manage crowds and control the movement of people including entering the court area.

At the same time, security personnel was deployed to monitor crowds and to intervene if necessary as people began milling around the court precincts.

Signages were also used to direct people to specific areas and to warn them of potential hazards should they choose to move towards Nakuru Law Courts.

Nakuru Law Courts are also rigged with technology such as video surveillance and crowd control software which can be used to monitor crowds and identify potential problems.

On Thursday, May 25, police officers were forced to lob teargas canisters at Njenga's supporters who thronged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in his support.

The former Mungiki leader is facing a number of charges among them being a member and supporting an organised and outlawed group.

Njenga's woos began a few days after addressing youth who attended his rally on May 11, 2023, at Wanyororo area in Nakuru County.

Investigators also claimed to have recovered rolls of bhang, a gun and a backpack strap that belongs to the National Police Service (NPS).

The items were allegedly recovered from his home Ngomongo in Nakuru County.

Among the lawyers representing Njenga are Ndegwa Njiru, Jeremiah Kioko and Azimio co-principal Martha Karua.
