Former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng was appointed as the gym instructor and head of security at Salama Bling Beach Resort in Kilifi on Tuesday, June 12, 2023, after completing her rehabilitation program in Mombasa.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who funded her rehabilitation process at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini, announced the news through his official social media channels. The update was met with enthusiasm and support from Kenyans across the country.
“Conje will be the gym instructor and head security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai.
"Together with her sister, coach and son, we inspected the hotel that she'll be working at, and they all agreed. She will now be making a living to support her family,” read part of Sonko's statement.
While disclosing plans for Conjestina’s new role, Sonko explained that he would not allow her to work in an environment that may expose her to alcohol and drugs again.
"My initial plan for Conje after healing was to employ her as the head of security operations at the international Club Volume but I changed my mind after considering her rehabilitation process. I don't want her around any environment associated with drugs,” explained Sonko.
Sonko noted that the former boxer is an inspiration to upcoming sportsmen and women in the country who look up to her as a role model.
“As Conje embarks on this new chapter of her life, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of young upcoming boxers,” Sonko pointed out.
He added that her story serves as a reminder that everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves, regardless of their past or present circumstances.
The former governor, however, insisted that Conjestina will not return to Siaya (her upcountry) unless there was an emergency.
Conjestina’s recovery journey started on August 28, 2021, when Sonko’s team landed in Gem, Siaya and airlifted her to Nairobi.
Consequently, she underwent treatment and assessments in relation to the struggles of suspected mental health challenges.
At the time, Sonko indicated that the former boxer would undergo a medical check-up and be admitted to rehab.
