United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party on Saturday, June 17, sent a message of condolence to the family of Chewani MCA Hamisi Iddi Deye who passed away in a tragic accident.
In a statement, UDA announced that the MCA, who was attached to the Tana River County Assembly, died in a road crash along Malindi-Garsen Road.
"The party and the people of Chewani ward have lost a focused and dedicated leader who put the interests of his people first.
"During this moment of grief, we pray for the soul of the departed, his family, and the people of Chewani ward," the UDA statement read in part.
Until his untimely death, the legislator was the minority leader in the county Assembly of Tana-River.
UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala confirmed his demise, noting that the people of Chewani had been robbed of a diligent leader.
"This morning, we receive the sad news of the untimely demise on Hamisi Iddi Deye, (Ndoyeni), our member of the County Assembly, Chewani Ward, Galole Constituency, Tana River County.
"His death, a result of a grisly road accident along the Garsen Road, robs his family, friends, relatives and the people of Tana River, a leader, father, husband and friend from whom the hope of a better future was guaranteed," Malala's statement read in part.
The cause of the tragic crash was yet established by the time of publishing.
NTSA Accident Data
According to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) data, pedestrian fatalities reduced from 359 in 2022 to 330 in 2023, while pillion passenger fatalities decreased from 109 in 2022 to 93 in 2023.
Driver fatalities increased from 95 in 2022, to 98 in 2023, while passenger fatalities increased from 154 in 2022 to 171 in 2023.
Following the surge in road accidents, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen launched a nationwide crackdown.
In the operation, NTSA established a clinic where motorists were expected to present their driving licences, and inspection certificates.
Speed limiters were also lined up for diagnosis during the operation, which started in Nairobi on Wednesday, June 14.
