Embattled Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni on Saturday, June 17, threatened to impeach President William Ruto before his five-year term ends if he continued to impose high taxes on Kenyans.

Speaking to the media in Kiambu County, Kioni stated that Kenyans were already grappling with the high cost of living adding that the proposed Finance Bill 2023 would only worsen the situation.

According to the former lawmaker, many businesses were affected by the continually rising high cost of living including the Mt Kenya region.

“The cost of living is unbearable. The taxation measures that will be put in place through the Finance Bill hurt most businesses in Mount Kenya.

“We are seeing the desperation level among Kenyans and the bill is only going to make things worse,” Kioni stated.

The SG warned that if the president and his deputy did not put in place measures to cushion Kenyans from the high cost of living, he risked being impeached by Kenyans.

“If this government is not serving us, we can be able to bring it to an end before the end of the five-year term that they think they have to serve.

“It is not mandatory that they finish the term. We can make your stay shorter if you are not useful to Kenyans,” added Kioni.

His sentiments were echoed by other leaders drawn from the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party who decried a high cost of living.

"The cost of living is unbearable, especially for women of the Mt Kenya region. We are getting to a place where we will have to tell this government that enough is enough. Our children have been branded names yet they are the same individuals that the government called hustlers and promised a good living.

"We have not seen this government do anything for our youth except mobilising them to steal sheep at the Northlands farm. Shame on them," a member of Jubilee stated.

Earlier on Thursday, June 8, a fraction of members of the Jubilee party announced plans to propose a Bill that would provide grounds for impeaching President William Ruto.

While making the announcement, they noted that the bill was informed by Ruto's interference in Jubilee Party affairs adding that it was the only way to bring order to the party.

A president can be impeached for violating the Constitution, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanours, according to the 2010 promulgated Constitution.
