One person passed away on Sunday night, June 18, following a tragic road accident at Winyo in Migori County.

Eighteen others were injured in the head-on collision between a matatu and a private vehicle along the Rongo-Homabay highway.

Eyewitnesses stated that the two vehicles collided after the drivers miscalculated their lane margins at a blind spot on the road.

The passengers seated at the front bore the brunt of the collision, resulting in severe injuries.

Emergency providers rushed the injured to Rongo Sub-County Hospital, where 15 were treated and discharged.

Three others, who sustained severe injuries, were referred to Migori Level Four Hospital for further treatment. Doctors monitoring the trio stated they were progressing well and were in line to be released after recuperation.

The dead body was also ferried to a local mortuary in Rongo Sub-county pending autopsy.

Following the accident, Rongo residents called upon the government to erect more bumps on the Rongo-Homabay road to slow down drivers.

They blamed the road design, particularly, the lack of street lights at the black spot was blamed for the increasing accidents.

"This area has recorded so many accidents, especially, at night when cars are speeding," Peter Otianga Obwanda lamented.

Obwanda also urged the traffic police to apprehend reckless drivers risking the lives of passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), recorded 4,432 road crashes in the country in 2022.

4,690 deaths and 9,933 injuries were also tallied, with the majority of the accidents (61 per cent) occurring on weekdays between 5 pm and 11 pm. Speeding, drunk driving and reckless driving were cited among the major causes of the 4,432 road carnages.
