Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday, June 27, unearthed joint plans with the Nairobi County government to relocate Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) using the railway station as a bus terminus.

In a statement, Murkomen noted that the move would pave the way for the construction of Nairobi Railway City.

The CS made the announcement after witnessing the signing of the commercial contract between Kenya Railways and WS Atkins International (a multinational engineering company based in the United Kingdom).

The deal would actualise the development of preliminary architectural designs for the Nairobi Central Station and subsequently the Nairobi Railway City.

The government seeks to position Nairobi as a leading World City and Commercial hub through the deal.

"In order to pave the way for the construction of the City, we will be working with the Nairobi City County and various stakeholders on a relocation plan for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) currently using the railway station as bus terminus to ensure the relocation process is as humane and as orderly as possible," he stated.

As a result, Murkomen projected that the development of the city would create 10,000 job opportunities. He urged the leadership of the UK company to incorporate local architects and contractors in the project slated to commence in January 2024.

"The development of the City will create 10,000 jobs directly and indirectly, regenerate the area around the Nairobi Central Station, provide a clean and green urban space, create a multi-modal transport system, and position Nairobi as a leading world city and commercial hub. "

"I urged the leadership of M/S Atkins to incorporate local architects and contractors as well as young graduates in the profession in the designing and development of the City as a way of harnessing their skills, growing their experience and placing money in their pockets in line with the Government's Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)," he noted.

The ambitious plan by the Kenya Kwanza administration seeks to aid in decongesting Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).

It will consist of over 10,000 affordable housing units, eco-friendly green spaces and a modern matatu terminus linked to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
