President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, could earn Ksh4.5 million more over the next two years, according to a proposal seen by Kenyans.co.ke

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in its latest review released in late June 2023, proposed increasing Ruto's salary by Ksh206,260 for the financial year 2024/25.

If the proposals are approved, starting from July 2024, Ruto's monthly salary will increase to Ksh1,650,000, up from the current Ksh1,443,750. This will result in an annual salary increase of Ksh2.4 million in two years.

On the other hand, Gachagua's proposed salary increase would raise his monthly income from Ksh1,367,438 to Ksh1,402,500, indicating a monthly change of Ksh175,312. Consequently, his annual income will increase by Ksh2.1 million.

In two years, the salaries of the president and his deputy will thus rise by Ksh4.5 million.

However, SRC indicated that the salary increment would be effected gradually.

For instance, Ruto will earn Ksh1,546,875  monthly from July 2023 to June 2024 before earning Ksh1,650,000 from July 2024 to June 2025.

SRC proposed that Gachagua earns Ksh1,367,438 from July 2023 to July 2024 and Ksh1,402,500 from July 2024 to June 2025.

In addition to the executive bigwigs, other senior state officials are also slated to receive salary increments, including cabinet secretaries who are expected to hit the Ksh1 million threshold in the proposed changes.

Attorney General Justin Muturi, CSs and the secretary to the cabinet, will earn Ksh1,056,000 as of July 2024 from the current Ksh924,000.

Principal Secretaries, on the other hand, will earn Ksh874,500 from the current Ksh819,844.

Parliament

In Parliament, MPs and Senators' salaries will rise from Ksh710,000 to Ksh769,201, excluding monthly committee sitting allowances of Ksh120,000.

Speakers of both houses will earn Ksh1,256,723, up from Ksh1,160,000.

County Government

SRC proposed governors earn Ksh1,056,000 starting July 2024 from the current Ksh924,000.

Members of the County Assembly will earn Ksh164,588, up from the current Ksh144,375.

SRC urged Kenyans to submit their suggestions on the proposals before approval.

"The memoranda should be addressed to the Commission Secretary/CEO and sent through the following email address: info@ser.go.ke and/or addressed to the Commission Secretary/CEO and sent through P.O. Box 43126, GPO-00100, Nairobi," read the notice in part.
