5 High-Ranking Jobs Kenyans Without Any Certificate Thrive In - Govt

Legislators, administrators and managers are among the high-ranking jobs that Kenyans without any academic certificate secured in the past 12 months.

This is according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022 (KDHS) published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Monday, July 3. The report factored in the occupation by employed women and men aged 15 to 49.  

Among those who were employed in the 12 months, a higher percentage of women (10 per cent) than that of men (5 per cent) work as legislators, administrators, and managers.

Further, the majority were in elementary occupations with 26 per cent of women and 27 per cent of men.

In the case of women, 13.7 per cent accounted for legislators, administrators and managers while 1.3 per cent were professionals. 1.1 per cent were associate professionals and 0.7 per cent occupied secretarial and clerical positions.

On the other hand, service workers and market sales workers were 22.2 per cent while 24 per cent were skilled farm, fishery, and wildlife workers. Craft workers, machine operators and elementary workers accounted for 1.9, 2.1 and 32.4 per cent respectively.

Men

2.8 per cent accounted for men in legislative, administrative and managerial positions while 1.8 per cent were professionals. Associate professionals comprised 2 per cent while 0.1 per cent performed secretarial and clerical work.

The two predominant job categories for men included skilled farm, wildlife workers (25.4 per cent) as well as elementary occupations (42.7 per cent).

According to KNBS, women who did non-agricultural work in the past year were more likely to receive cash-only payment for their work than those who did agricultural work (88 per cent vis-a-vis 52 per cent).

Overall, 79 per cent of employed women received cash only as payment for their work while 17 per cent were not paid.

The data also revealed that 60 per cent of women and 81 per cent of men were employed in the past year. Further, the percentage of women who are either divorced, separated or widowed doubled that of men (12 per cent to 6 per cent). 

The education category was listed according to no education (without any certificate), primary, secondary and more than secondary (middle-level colleges and universities).

The primary objective of the report was to provide up-to-date estimates of demographic and health indicators to guide the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of population and health-related programs at national and county levels.
