A motorist plying the Thika - Garissa Highway on Monday, July 3, captured a man dangerously hanging on a speeding lorry while stealing fruits being ferried to a local factory.
A video that went viral showed the man clinging onto a sack and the rails of the lorry while using the other to take the pineapples one at a time.
Despite the boxed cables being placed at the back of the lorry to prevent the fruits from falling over, the man was still able to get to the fruits.
In the 44-second video, the man took over 15 pineapples and was still stealing by the time the video ended.
The driver of the lorry, however, did not realise that something was amiss prompting the motorist recording the video to flash his headlights. However, the move proved futile.
"I have even warned him using my headlights but he cannot see," the motorist was heard telling his passengers. At one point, the man was captured swinging at the back of the lorry as the driver navigated a sharp corner.
After the video made its way on social media, a number of Kenyans raised concerns over the risky practice with some calling on the police to arrest the culprits involved in the now rampant incidents.
"I was using that road last week and I saw six of them stealing from one of the lorries. The funny thing is that some of them even climb next to the driver's seat. Feels like a cartel-run ring," a road user lamented.
Additionally, area residents indicated that the incident was common given the number of deliveries made to the local fruit juice factory in the area.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Thika resident, Dennis Kibet, revealed that the incidents were common during harvesting seasons.
He also indicated that some of the lorry drivers also hired watchmen who sit at the back of the lorry to ensure that nobody steals them.
"It is very common. On some occasions, the company also hires watchmen who at times get into fights with those who try to steal when the vehicle is still in motion," he stated.
