Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege has insisted that Jubilee Party will not join President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza Coalition.

Speaking in a TV interview over the weekend, the lawmaker who is seeking to take over from former President Uhuru Kenyatta as Jubilee Party chairperson, however, confirmed that she harboured plans to separate the party from Azimio coalition.

She noted that Jubilee Party did not agree with a number of policies introduced within the Raila Odinga-led coalition.

Chege, therefore, insisted that she intended to grow the party independently to prosperity.

"Since elections, we have not agreed whether we are in Azimio or not. Our wish is that we do not want to be involved in the Azimio Coalition and we are also not joining Kenya Kwanza. We want Jubilee to be an independent party," she explained.

The outspoken lawmaker further claimed that she turned down an offer from Kenya Kwanza to serve as the Nairobi County deputy governor.

She, however, turned down the offer which came with 40 per cent cabinet positions for her loyalty at the former ruling party.

"Uhuru was helped by the party more than he helped us. We were left as party orphans after the elections and we had no direction. I was given an offer by the Kenya Kwanza Government to become the Nairobi deputy governor and had I accepted the offer, I would be co-governing the county. This would be in line with my vision and ambitions.

"I declined (the offer) in order to remain at the Jubilee party so no one should question my loyalty. It's his (Uhuru's) leadership style that betrayed him and not us," she added.

Chege and Kanini Kega have been embroiled in a tussle with the Jubilee party to take over the chairperson and secretary general positions respectively.

In mid-July, the High Court issued conservatory orders stopping the duo from taking over Jubilee Party.

In a ruling by Justice Asenath Ongeri, the court stopped the expulsion of Jeremiah Kioni as Secretary General, David Murathe (Vice Chair), and Kagwe Gichohi (Treasurer).

"The application dated 12/7/2023 is certified urgent. The same is to be served upon the respondents for an interparty hearing on 26/7/2023 before Hon. Justice Visram. In the meantime, conservatory orders are granted in terms of prayers 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the application dated 12/7/2023," read the ruling in part.
