ICT CS Eliud Owalo launched free Wi-Fi on Saturday, 29 July in Homa Bay and Siaya counties as the Kenya Kwanza administration moves to fulfill one of its campaign pledges.
While speaking at Asumbi Girls High School, the CS promised to connect more areas in the region to the country's ICT infrastructure.
The digital skills, Owalo noted will help sharpen the skills of Kenyans and prepare them for the future of work.
"We are going to set up a digital laboratory in each and every ward so that people in the village can also acquire digital skills," he stated.
He also added that the ministry is connecting a total of 25,000 wifi hubs all over the country. He noted that markets and bus terminus will be the top priorities for the projects.
The Cs reaffirmed that this would be a game changer in curbing the changing dynamics and unemployment rate in the country. In addition, he noted that it would be his joy to see young people jump on the opportunities that the digital space offers.
He spurred them to register for training in relevant institutions to acquire the necessary technical skills required for online employment.
The government will collaborate with Google and local telco providers to commission the hotspots. The ongoing project has also seen other counties get connected with Wi-Fi.
Kenya is one of the leading tech hubs in the region. The Kenya Kwanza administration has promised a lastmile connection to major urban centres across all counties in the country.
Owalo highlighted that the ICT ministry has developed a comprehensive blueprint to ensure that every part of the country is connected to the internet.
