Mwingi Central Member of Parliament, Gideon Mulyungi has refuted allegations circulating on social media that he physically assaulted a local businesswoman.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Thursday, August 3, Mulyungi elected under Wiper Party, claimed that the allegations were shared widely to damage his reputation

“The reports are not only frivolous, vindictive and prejudicial, but deliberately manufactured to assassinate my character,” Mulyungi, an opposition politician, lamented.

He added that he would take legal action against the businesswoman who he accused of spreading false allegations.

The MP claimed that, in one incident, the businesswoman sponsored young men to attack him within his constituency, allegations that Kenyans.co.ke could not independently verify.

Two suspects alleged to be working in cahoots with the woman were reportedly arrested by police officers in Mwingi on Wednesday, August 2, after the MP recorded a statement claiming that his life was in danger.

The duo was allegedly arraigned at the Mwingi Law courts and charged with coordinating goons armed with bows and arrows to launch an assault on the lawmaker. A pre-trial was set for Monday, August 7.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, August 2, the businesswoman alleged that the lawmaker stormed her shop and roughed her up, alleging that she allowed her employees to gossip about him.

"I was at work when the area MP, Gideon Mulyungi, stormed in with a team of around 20 to 30 people.

"He pushed me and even broke my glasses," the lady claimed, further alleging that the MP sexually assaulted him.

Irritated by the incident, area residents took to the streets demanding the arrest of the lawmaker. They also escorted the businesswoman to a nearby police station, where she recorded a statement.

Police are yet to issue a statement on the allegations.
