Officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) under the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) working in Congo assisted a woman to deliver a baby.
The officers on patrol in Kibumba, in Nyiragongo Territory North Kivu Province were called to attend to the woman who was in labour pains.
Since health facilities in the area were closed, the KDF Medical Team rose up to the occasion and helped the woman safely give birth.
The medical team conducted a successful delivery and stabilised the mother and baby before they were transferred to Kinyaruchinya Health Center in Goma.
This unusual event was different from the operations conducted by the military in conjunction with the Democratic Republic of Congo Government and other stakeholders.
Through the joint cooperation in the region, DRC hopes peace will be restored in North Kivu, and the reopening of social and public amenities like hospitals and schools.
Meanwhile, instances of strangers assisting women to deliver in unexpected areas display a sense of unison and humanity.
In June, employees at the Madaraka Express Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and a doctor who was among the passengers helped a lady deliver a baby girl on the train.
The newborn baby and mother were later rushed to Mariakani Sub-County Hospital for further medical assistance.
Such acts of kindness by strangers are lauded with some awarded gifts. In May, a matatu driver and his tout were honoured for rerouting the vehicle to take a pregnant woman to the hospital.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) praised the duo while the sacco gifted them phones among other goodies.
"Their action exemplified all the virtues of servant leadership and demonstrated the highest level of compassion," the authority detailed in a statement.
