Wilfred Onduse on Saturday, May 20, won the hearts of Kenyans after he rushed a woman who had delivered mid-journey to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for emergency attention.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the K-Trans Ltd driver through the management of the bus service, detailed how he together with his conductor and other passengers managed to help a woman who delivered her baby while on board the vehicle on Friday, May 19.

According to Onduse, the woman boarded the vehicle at the Kenya Railways stage at around 1:30 pm. The newborn mother appeared unwell even as the driver thought that the woman had been injured.

The driver who plies the Nairobi-Ngong route narrated that he was informed by his conductor that the woman's condition was worsening and that they needed to rush her to the hospital.

"At AGIP, the conductor told me that the woman was sick and was in pain and needed medical attention. I then instructed the conductor to alert the traffic police so that the vehicle is given way and the cops did just that," he detailed.

However, despite the intervention of the police, the woman's water broke with a number of passengers suggesting that the matatu be parked on the side of the road for the woman to deliver her baby.

Onduse indicated that he was insistent on having the woman receive medical attention and rushed her to KNH where they were received at the gate by the hospital's security.

Immediately, the vehicle was directed to the emergency unit where doctors were alerted of the incident.

"The doctors came and attended to the lady for 30 minutes on the bus. They later took her in after they were done," the driver recalled.

During the 30-minute wait, Onduse recalled that the passengers sat patiently and waited for the woman to receive medical attention.

The vehicle was then cleaned at the hospital before the passengers continued on their journey back to Ngong.

Following the incident, Kenyans celebrated the driver, the conductor and the passengers for embracing the Kenyan spirit and helping the woman who was in need.

"These are the individuals who need to be given presidential commendations. Such a bold act," Kiathy Vickie commented

"There are definitely good people in the world. That driver deserves respect," Clifford Odhiambo added.
