Sammy Ondimu Ngare, a corporal with the National Police Service (NPS) has mobilised his followers on social media to contribute towards the construction of a modern home for an old man who went viral due to the wanting state of his habitation.

The police officer on Monday, August 14, intervened after a video of the elderly man went viral on social media, with many calling on well-wishers to help the elderly man get a habitable home.

In response, Ondimu rallied his colleagues, friends and followers who eventually contributed more than the projected amount.

"Dear followers, thank you. You are the special type of people that change lives, lift people up, and make the world a better place. Thank you for your donation and your association with my cause.

"You heard the call for help and answered it magnificently. Thank you for your financial gift, and for your willingness to help us move forward," Ondimu stated on his page.

The elderly man who was identified as Mzee Kefa comes from Ibenjo village in Kisii County.

Mzee Kefa has been living in a dilapidated house whose floor is completely dug out, and extensively worn-out as a result of poor construction.

The viral video also depicted the walls of the house as perforated, with light visibly piercing through, while the old man literally consumed dust and filth dripping from the columns.

In response, Ondimu implored Kenyans to assist him in raising at least Ksh120,000. The money, he said would be utilised to construct a simple yet decent house, providing a more suitable living environment for the elderly man.

"There is a lot that needs to be done to build a house for him. The old man does not even have a toilet plus other basic amenities," Ondimu stated.

Officer Ondimu revealed that on top of building the house, he has set aside extra money to put up a pit latrine outside the home.

"They started digging the pit today, and will most likely complete the construction of the toilet within two or three days," Ondimu revealed.

The police officer has promised to keep updating his followers on the advancement of the construction of Mzee Kefa's new home.
