Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his former schoolmates at Kianyaga High School treated 75 teachers and the Board of Management to a five-day retreat at the Coast.
As the patron, Gachagua explained on Sunday that the retreat aimed to plan and strategize the transformation of his former school into a centre of excellence, with the goal of becoming the best-performing institution in the country.
"I am encouraged that my old school will soon be on the Kenyan map," Gachagua stated.
The DP disclosed that the alumni signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the teachers mandating the former to be responsible for handling hardware aspects, including infrastructural development.
Conversely, the teachers will be entrusted with managing the software elements, particularly performance-related matters.
On the inaugural days of the retreat, the Second in Command emphasized his resolute determination to make sacrifices in order to ensure that the school regains its former glory.
Gachagua also reminisced about his six years-journey at the school based in Kirinyaga County, where he studied his A to O levels.
Besides his six years as a student, Gachagua also served as the District Officer for Gichugu Division for three years between 1990 and 1993.
"When I came here for my homecoming as a Depuy President I looked at the school and the facilities and I felt a bit down. My heart was also broken when I looked at the performance," Gachagua remarked.
David Chombaa, the Principal of Alliance High School and an alumnus of Kianyaga Boys, is scheduled to preside over day two of the retreat.
DP Gachagua has often praised his high school for shaping him into today's leader. He attributes his success to his high school principal, Julius Kano Ndumbi, who encouraged him to follow his dreams.
In March this year, Gachagua hosted his former classmates at his Harambee House Annex offices, where the alumni recounted their high school experiences.
"We will mobilise all the old boys and teachers to meet at the school to assess the institution's needs and chart how to improve its performance," Gachagua pledged.
