Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was compelled to reshuffle her staff for the first time since she was sworn into office in August 2022.

The first-term county chief, on Thursday, made the changes after key employees were accused of leaking confidential information two weeks ago.

Details of the sensitive information were unavailable at the time of publishing this article. However, unverified reports claimed that the intel was linked to allegations of corruption within the governor's office.

The leaked information reportedly includes classified details such as names and companies that have received funds from the county over the past year.

Kawira Mwangaza sent the Chief Officer in charge of Roads, Mr George Kimathi, on compulsory leave as investigations into the leakage commence.

Charles Mwenda was transferred to the water department from the Finance docket in the recent changes.

Edwin Murangiri Mutuma, who previously served as Meru Youth Service's Chief Executive Officer, replaced Mwenda in the Finance docket.

Governor Mwangaza met President William Ruto at the Nakuru State House hours before the reshuffles were made on Thursday afternoon,

The governor was in the company of a number of Meru members of the county assembly, allied to both the ruling party and the opposition.

It was yet to be clear whether the reshuffles were made in line with agendas discussed in the meeting with President William Ruto in Nakuru.

Two weeks ago, the embattled governor faced a charged county assembly when she appeared to answer questions regarding the alleged diversion of public funds through suspicious payments to her relatives and close aides.

The governor refuted the claims that Ksh42.4 million was paid to four individuals within the last year under her watch.

A petition had been filed at the Senate and forwarded to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to look into the Ksh42.4 million saga that involved payments to four individuals close to the governor.

The petitioner, Thuranira Selesion, stated, “Meru County Governor has been looting public coffers in a brutal manner through people related to her (nepotism) in total violation and contravention of Article 10 of the constitution."

He accused the governor of going against the dictates of the Constitution and violating the Public Finance Management Act, the abuse of administrative action, leadership and integrity and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act.

Mwangaza survived impeachment in December 2022 after the Senate found the allegations against her insubstantial.

The Senate Special Committee, led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, said that the Committee could not ascertain allegations of nepotism, illegal appointments, and abuse of power.
