The National Dialogue Committee appointed by the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja coalitions to end the political impasse has called on Kenyans to give their views on the five major issues that will guide their negotiations.
The five key issues include the high cost of living and other governance issues, electoral justice and related matters, entrenching Funds into the Constitution, establishment, and entrenchment of state offices and fidelity to political parties/coalitions, and the law on multiparty democracy.
In a notice released on Friday, the Committee, co-chaired by National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, invited Kenyans to collect views from the public on whether they are satisfied with the five talking points that will guide the bipartisan talks.
After collecting the views, the two camps will weigh in on the additional information obtained through public input to properly structure the framework.
How to Participate
Kenyans can give their views by writing an email to the National Dialogue Committee through nationaldialoguecommittee@parliament.go.ke or written memoranda addressed to the Clerk of the National Assembly or Clerk of the Senate through P.O Box 41842-00100 Nairobi.
The memoranda should be delivered to the Ground Floor, Parliament Buildings.
Kenyans can also submit oral representations at the Public Hearings to be held on a date commissioned by the National Dialogue Committee.
Kenyans will be required to make their submission on or before September 8, 2023.
Five Issues
The two camps signed the framework on August 30, 2023, consisting of five issues that combined the demands from both Azimio and Kenya Kwanza.
In terms of constitutional matters, the committee will set to discuss Article 43 of the Constitution, the cost of living and related issues, implementation of the two-thirds gender rule, governance issues, promoting national unity and inclusivity in public appointments.
Electoral justice will involve restructuring and reconstitution of the IEBC, boundaries delimitation, and audit of the 2022 presidential election.
On the other hand, entrenching funds into the Constitution includes the National Government Constituencies Development Fund, the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, and the Senate Oversight Fund
The establishment of the office of the Leader of the Official Opposition and the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary were also agreed on as part of the talks.
Fidelity to political parties involves the prevention of interference with political parties/coalitions
