The government on Friday announced a mass auction of goods, including cars, that have overstayed at the Port of Mombasa.

According to the Gazette Notice issued by Lucy Ng'ang'a, chief manager port operations, owners of the goods were given up to 30 days to remove their items from the warehouse.

After the 30-day ultimatum lapses, the goods will be sold on auction on October 4, 2023.

Vehicles set up for auction range from used and new models, including Nissan March, Nissan Sedan, Mercedes Benz, Suzuki Swift, Nissan Note, X-Trail, Toyota Harrier, and Toyota Pobox.

Others include Toyota Sienta, Toyota Passo, Mazda Demio, Toyota Land Cruiser, Honda Fit, Volkswagen Tiguan, and used Subaru Forester.

In addition to the vehicles, other items on sale include machine spare parts, rice mill machinery, printed books, and donations of shoes and toys.

The uncollected goods were brought into the country between 2021 and February 2023 and will be disposed of from the customs warehouse and availed for inspection by interested buyers.

According to the law, commodities auctioned by the government are often considered to be abandoned goods by owners who failed to pay revenue that accumulated since the date of importation.

Unless such goods are removed within 30 days from the date of notice, they are listed for sale by public auction.

How to Bid

Once the 30 days lapse, the goods that will still be held at the warehouse will be listed for auction.

Interested individuals are advised to view the items at 12 designated sections of the warehouse on October 2, 2023, and October 3, 2023, during office hours.

The period will allow bidders to check the items on sale and examine their condition before the day of sale.

On October 4, 2023, potential buyers must register with the auctioneer and be given bidder cards to identify all participants.

The highest bidder for a particular item takes ownership of the goods immediately after paying their bid price.
