As the country kicks off the inaugural climate summit in Nairobi, Kenyan resorts which are renowned the world over are also stepping up action to lower their carbon footprint.
Afar Magazine, a travel media outlet based in California, named three Kenyan resorts including Angama Mara, Segera Retreat and Ol Donyo Lodge among the 20 based African hotels to visit for their positive impact.
"These African safari camps stand out for more than their design, location, and superlative hospitality—they’re all leaving a positive impact on their destinations," read the statement from the magazine.
Angama Mara, which is located at the Maasai Mara National Reserve, runs a foundation dedicated to raising funds to support conservation, education, healthcare, and small businesses of landowners around where it is based.
The resort is an exquisite hotel that charges Ksh260,000 per night for its visitors during its peak season. It is divided into two camps with each 15 glass-fronted suites in bold Maasai colors.
Segera retreat, which is located in Laikipia, is an off-grid eco resort that reinforces effort to save the environment from carbon degradation.
Some of the guests to the retreat access the lodge using helicopters and enjoy a stay at one of the six one-bedroom villas managed with exotic art collections.
"Working closely with Maasai communities, the privately owned ranch runs several successful community projects, from a female antipoaching ranger academy to solar farms, schools, and beading co-operatives. The planting of 2 million indigenous trees is the resort’s ambitious reforestation project to restore fertile topsoil, reduce erosion, and offset carbon emissions," explained the magazine.
Ol Donyo Lodge, located at Chyulu Hills National Park, is part of the Great Plains Conservation safari lodge collection to impact the environment and its community.
The resort boasts of nine suites each with a private plunge pool and an outdoor star bed.
Climate Summit
Efforts by the three lodges compliment President William Ruto's efforts towards a green future. On Monday, the Head of State kicked of the Africa Climate Summit at Kenyatta International Convention Centre(KICC).
President Ruto, who is hosting over 20 heads of state, has confirmed that urgent action is needed to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Head of State added that the Summit will serve as a platform to inform, frame, and influence commitments, pledges, and outcomes, ultimately leading to the development of an effective plan to curb the climate change.
