The Nation Media Group (NMG) on Tuesday announced the appointment of Joe Ageyo as the Editor-in-Chief within the editorial department.
In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Chief Executive Stephen Gitagama announced that Ageyo will assume the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the converged newsroom model.
He will also be charged with the overall responsibilities for the Group's Editorial operations across all platforms and ensure the Group's Editorial Policy is upheld.
In his new role, the former Citizen TV Editorial Director will be reporting to Gitagama and will be expected to furnish him with a status report on all editorial operations.
This marks a steady rise for Ageyo who joined the company in April 2022 as the Editorial Director, Broadcasting Division. He would be later promoted to the Group Editorial Director position in November 2022.
The journalist has previously worked at Royal Media Services as Editorial Director, Standard Group as Managing Editor and Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) as a Senior Reporter.
He holds a degree in Agribusiness Management from Egerton University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi, and an Advanced Certificate in Environmental Diplomacy from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
He also pursued a Masters in Environmental Governance from the University of Manchester and is currently pursuing a PhD in Media Studies at Daystar University.
NMG has been making a raft of changes since charting a roadmap that will enable the media stable transition from the traditional media business model to the modern model that places a huge emphasis on digital media.
The new shift has also placed pressure on editors to deliver high-quality content as NMG gears up to restore a paywall that it had previously pulled down in the buildup to the 2022 General Election.
A source, who previously spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, revealed internal conflict in the company after the media stable effected mass firings which mostly affected regional correspondents.
The layoffs caused uncertainty within the newsroom with the management maintaining that more layoffs are in the pipeline until the structure is streamlined.
“The leadership is not even stopping people from leaving. They are encouraging it, saying things are bad,” the source said.
