Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairperson David Oginde on Wednesday revealed that the government has been able to recover a 60-acre piece of land that had been grabbed in South B, Nairobi.
Oginde who was speaking during a press briefing explained that the land had been grabbed by powerful individuals who he did not reveal.
The EACC Chairman revealed that after the land was recovered, it was put into public use for the Affordable Housing Project.
Oginde divulged that the government was able to take back the land through the services of the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA).
"This 60 acres of land is now being used for low-cost housing. Buildings are already coming up on it, some are nearing completion," he stated.
He added that the buildings being constructed are 14-storeys each comprising of 2-bedroom, 1-bedroom and bedsitter units.
While Oginde did not mention the land grabbers, he explained that the prime land would have benefitted a few individuals in the country.
According to current land rates, an acre in South B averages Ksh65 million to Ksh100 million.
EACC has been working closely with ARA as well as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to crack down on grabbers who have taken hold of public land.
Last week, directors of three Coast-based companies surrendered Ksh305 million property to EACC.
In an out-of-court settlement, the companies returned the title deeds of four islands within the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Reserve to the government.
"The Commission encourages all other persons illegally holding public property to take advantage of the ADR mechanism to resolve disputes as opposed to waiting for a lengthy and costly litigation process,” EACC stated then.
