Ruto Flies to US For UN General Assembly

President William Ruto on Wednesday evening departed for the United States with the foreign trip coinciding with his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua’s working trip to Colombia and Cuba.

With the two leaders out of the country, technically leaving National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula as the highest-ranking government official in the country according to the Constitution.

Incidentally, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Attorney General Justin Muturi are in London, United Kingdom for a working visit.

The President in a press release shared by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed revealed he was attending the 78th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

The Assembly is slated to start on September 19 to 23 with the theme of rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity.

Additionally, the session will discuss accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals toward peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.

According to Mohamed, Ruto jetted out of the country five days before the UN assembly so as to forge tech ties with companies in Silicon Valley, San Fransisco.

During his time at San Fransisco, the President will meet tech leaders of Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Apple.

“The visit aims to enhance investment opportunities and trade relations with the US, with a particular focus on nurturing Kenya's thriving start-up sector known as the Silicon Savannah,” Mohammed announced.

In his meeting with the tech billionaires, Ruto will emphasize Kenya’s young talent, green energy initiatives, and its value as an alternative supply chain for American companies.

While in New York for the UN General Assembly, President Ruto will chair on the sidelines a session of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change.

He will also participate in discussions on the High-Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy as well as hold bilateral meetings with world leaders. 

On his part, Gachagua is attending the Global Coffee Producers and Roasters Forum in Bogota, Colombia, and thereafter going to Cuba for the G77 Summit.
