Students of Nyandarua National Polytechnic on Friday held peaceful demonstrations along the Nyahururu-Olkalou highway to Oljoro Orok, protesting over the rise of insecurity around the institution, which led to the loss of a staff on Monday last week.
In a video, the students expressed their concerns about increased cases of muggings and robberies, highlighting the case of Peter Kibe, the institution's Student Council auditor, who was killed by unknown people on October 23, 2023.
Armed with placards and chants, the students marched on the school compound, demanding measures to be taken by the authorities.
They also mentioned that the thieves had gained notoriety for robbing them and using motorcycles to escape from the scene.
“He died because of the insecurities in the school compound we are here because the insecurity has been too much, and as ladies, we feel even we are not safe,” one of the female students told the media.
They also urged police officers to enhance security around residential areas, including pathways, shopping centres and hostels.
“Administration has denied us the blessing to build our demonstrations now as it is, we demand justice for Kibe, and the school lighting system,” another student commented.
On October 23, 2023, reports indicated that Kibe and his friends were accosted and attacked by a group of people who robbed them of their belongings.
Following the attack, Kibe succumbed to severe blood loss while being rushed to the hospital.
Two months ago, residents and locals raised an uproar over the increase in burglary and theft in Nyandarua County. The residents reported several cases of robberies, burglary, and stock theft, calling on the police to intervene.
"The is theft of domestic animals, chicken, cows, potatoes and household items, we asking security to look into this issue," Joseph Mwangi, a resident of Leshau Pondo, stated on August 7, 2023.
Ndaragwa Member of Parliament George Gachagua, who visited the residents following the outcry, assured that he would ensure more police are deployed to enhance security.
