Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has unveiled new generation electric buses with enhanced security features targeting passengers travelling into and out of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a statement by the Authority on Wednesday, the vehicles were unveiled in partnership with two matatu Saccos, Super Metro and MetroTrans.

Security features installed on the buses include CCTV and a real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking system for monitoring the buses.

KAA added that staff running the buses be subject to thorough screening and comprehensive background checks as part of its standard hiring process to ensure the safety of passengers.

"Excitement at JKIA this morning as we get ready to launch  7th generation electric commuter buses in partnership with Metrotrans East Africa Limited & Super Metro Limited! A big stride towards a sustainable, eco-friendly future.

"The electric buses come with thorough background checks for staff, real-time GPS tracking, and CCTV surveillance to ensure a safe and secure experience for all passengers and airport users," read the statement in part.

According to KAA, the vehicles will operate in four routes including JKIA - Kitengela, JKIA - Expressway - CBD, JKIA - Utawala - Embakasi - Outering - CBD, JKIA - Expressway - Westlands.

Details of the exact stages where the vehicles were stationed were, however, not revealed.

A few weeks earlier, Super Metro announced that it would begin operations between the CBD and JKIA, with the first rides set to be free.

Super Metro attributed the new route to providing passengers travelling to JKIA with transport alternatives other than digital taxis, which are more expensive.

It was yet to be clear whether the buses will use the Nairobi Expressway or Mombasa Road.

Using Mombasa Road appeared more certain as the Expressway CBD toll station near Green Park Terminus is still under construction.
