13 legislators from Kiambu County have written to Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano accusing Governor Kimani Wamatangi of sabotaging national government projects.
The legislators led by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah claimed that Governor Wamatangi has sabotaged the national government's plans to gazette the Kiambu EPZ and other Affordable Housing Projects, and as such, have called on the Minister to fast-track the process to allow the county to be at par with Murang'a whose EPZ has already been gazetted.
''We the undersigned Members of Parliament from Kiambu County wish to notify you that following a consultative meeting with HE the President on Friday 27 Oct 2023, we did request him to assist the counties of Kiambu and Murang'a to have the twin EPZs gazzeted, a request that he assented to positively.''
''We are however concerned that the Murang'a EPZ has been gazzeted but not the Kiambu one. We wish to request that you kindly fast-track the gazetting of the Kiambu EPZ so as to move at the same pace as that of our neighbors — Murang'a. This will preempt the inevitable loss by our County of all investors to Murang'a County,'' stated the legislators.
The legislators further requested the Cabinet Secretary to hasten the process to allow thousands of unemployed youth in the County to benefit from such investments.
''You may have already noticed the uncooperative character of our County Governor in this matter plus his deliberate attempts to sabotage most of the National Government Projects. Kindly downplay Governor Kimani Wamatangi's deliberate sabotage undermining of national government projects,'' the legislators said in a statement.
''As the elected representatives of the people of Kiambu, we request you to act with speed and we reiterate our commitment to working with your ministry and the national government to actualize all these development projects in Kiambu,'' the letter stated in conclusion.
Lawmakers who appended their signatures to the letter include Kiambu Senator Karung'o Thangwa, MPS Alice Wahome (Thika), Wanjiku Njuguna(Kiambaa), Chege John(Limuru), Simon Ng'ang'a (Ruiru), James Kamau (Kabete), George Koimburi(Juja), Anne Wanjiku(Kiambu), Teresia Wanjiru(Nominated), Joseph Mburu( Lari), Waithaka John(Kiambu) and Gabriel Kagombe (Gatundu South).
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been at loggerheads with Kiambu politicians who have accused him of going against President William Ruto's development blueprint and veering off on how own.
On November 2, several MCAs threatened to forward a motion of impeachment over what they described as Wamatangi's failure to appoint County Executive Committee members.
The Kiambu governor has also been under pressure by powerful forces to release land that previously belonged to a multinational fruit processing company.
In another incident, Wamatangi was reportedly under pressure to release a parcel of land located in Thika Town, Kiambu County, claims he dismissed.
