Police in Rongo, Migori County on Thursday launched a manhunt for a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidate who cut a fellow pupil's hand over a piece of biscuit.
A quarrel ensued between the two pupils of Kasodo Primary School, prompting one to unleash a knife which he used to chop his classmate's finger before going into hiding.
The two were fighting over a piece of biscuit, contending on who should have it, a wrangle that subsequently led to the tragic incident.
While some have claimed the student chopped off only a finger, others have claimed the candidate chopped off a whole hand.
The two engaged in the fight hours after completing their KCPE examinations.
The incident shocked teachers and other pupils. Cases of violent crimes among minors have been on the rise in the country.
The pupil was rushed to the hospital where he received treatment.
When the police officers arrived at the scene, the perpetrator had fled into hiding, which prompted the law enforcement to launch a manhunt.
Police officers have since launched investigations into the matter and have begun searches to bring the suspect to book.
Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and KCPE examinations came to a close Wednesday where approximately 2.6 million students across 33,000 centers sat for the exams.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Wednesday noted the marking of the exams had commenced and results would be released before Christmas.
Basic Education principal secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang further stated that the three-day exam period was successful and they recorded a minimal number of teenage pregnancies this year.
