5 primary school pupils from Arap Moi Primary School in Uasin Gishu County died by drowning on Saturday during a school trip.

Reports indicate that the tragic accident occurred at approximately 5 pm when the group of pupils visited an amusement park in Eldoret.

During their visit, they took turns boat riding in a man-made lake, and unfortunately, one of the boats capsized

The pupils were in the midst of preparations for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, set to commence on Monday, October 30.

According to reports, a sixth pupil survived and was rushed to a local hospital for specialised medical treatment.

The deceased were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) ahead of burial preparations.

Following the accident, parents rushed to the school demanding answers from the administration on what transpired during the trip.

The Sub-County Security Committee was summoned to convene an emergency meeting to get to the bottom of the matter.

Emotions ran high as parents came to terms with the unfolding of events and losing their loved ones barely two days before the national exams.

Meanwhile, at least 1.4 million pupils are set to sit for the 2023 KCPE exam.

I.2 million will sit for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) while 903,206 will sit for the Kenya Certificate of  Secondary Education (KCSE).

The national exams will be held between October 30 and November 24.
