Isiolo County Governor Abdi Hassan was on Friday forced to call a helicopter to save a pregnant woman with birth complications stuck in floods.
The medical team ferrying the patient was caught between a rock and a hard place after the vehicle they were using got stuck as floods raged.
Health officials ferrying the woman were forced to seek urgent help since the woman was in critical condition and needed immediate medical attention.
The vehicle was ferrying the patient from Malkadara to Isiolo County Referral Hospital when the incident occurred.
“We involved Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) vehicles who helped us move the patient from Malkadaka to Garbatula, on its way to our facility In Isiolo, but due to heavy rains, the vehicle got stuck and could not move,” an official narrated.
The team made a call to the governor who immediately hired the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy helicopter to ferry the patient.
A helicopter arrived at the scene and the patient was exchanged from the vehicle and flown to the hospital.
“Through the efforts of our governor who reached out to the management of Lewa, they helped us in evacuating the patient to our facility,” an official remarked.
According to the medics, the patient had birth complications and could not deliver normally, forcing the hospital management to transfer her to a referral hospital for further assistance.
“We are happy to report that the patient arrived in stable condition,” the official noted.
The incident comes a day after a lorry driver and his passengers were rescued by a helicopter after raging floods submerged the vehicle following a heavy downpour.
The driver operating in Samburu County had attempted to drive through rushing waters but he was overpowered by the water flow.
During the rescue mission, the helicopter made several rounds to get the victims to a safer place before the lorry was fully submerged in the water.
