Three Businessmen were arrested on Tuesday in Mombasa after offering a police officer a bribe of Ksh1.7 million.

According to a report by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the suspects were accused of planning to interfere with ongoing investigations into fraudulent deals at the port of Mombasa.

Upon learning that the suspects wanted the investigations to go their way, the officers reported the matter to EACC, who acted fast and apprehended the trio.

The trio was held at the Mombasa Central Police Station and will be arraigned at the Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday.

"The Commission applauds the Police Officer who declined the bribe offer and instead reported the matter to EACC," read part of the report.

EACC urged other police officers to be vigilant and also report culprits who seek to engage in graft.

The arrest came hours after the commission apprehended a senior county official in Busia, accusing him of interfering with the investigations.

Par the commission, the CEO of the County Public Service Board was arrested at her home and taken to the EACC offices.

The commission has vowed to weed out all corrupt leaders, especially those who served in the last regime and sitting governors.

In August, EACC announced investigations on all leaders involved in the embezzlement of public funds, payment of fraudulent pending bills, and blatant disregard of financial management laws.

A survey from the commission indicated that  Marsabit, Samburu, Wajir, and Mandera counties were leading in corruption.
