Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report has revealed some of the most corrupt counties in North Eastern parts of the country.
In the report that was tabled before Senate's Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) on Thursday, September 8, Marsabit County is leading with 90 cases, followed by Samburu with 87 cases, Wajir 32 and Mandera 22.
In particular, Marsabit Senator Mohamed Chute demanded to know the number of cases the commission has recommended to the Director of Public Prosecutions following reports of corruption allegations in the four counties.
In response, the commission stated that the cases are part of 231 graft- related investigations in which they are seeking to arrest and prosecute suspects in the four counties.
"The Commission has prioritised 67 high impact cases which have been completed or are at various advanced stages of investigation," the report read in parts.
According EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak, a number of the cases involve inquiries into inflation of tender for purchase of goods such as tractors and vehicles.
EACC equally outlined a few success which they have registered in the counties, including ongoing prosecution of former Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal.
"Allegations of embezzlement of public funds by officials of the county government of Wajir amounting to Ksh26.1 million has been finalised in court and the accused convicted.
"There is also an inquiry into allegations of irregular recruitment to fill 23 positions by the Samburu County Assembly as well as claims of misappropriation of public funds by the county government in the purchase of survey equipment at an inflated cost of Ksh9.6 million," Mbarak stated.
In Marsabit, EACC is seeking to recover stolen money in six cases where county officials alleged embezzled funds donated for drilling of boreholes and tree planting.
Similarly, there is also an inquiry into Ksh20 million relief food supply tender awarded to a local Marsabit company.
It was also reported that some Ksh20 million was irregularly disbursed pay for excavation of water pan in the same county.
Mbarak also told the Senate committee that many of the cases which were presented to DPP for prosecution have been referred back to the agency for further investigations.
