One person has been confirmed dead while two others are nursing serious injuries after grisly road accident involving three vehicles at Tsavo River area, along Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident that took place on Wednesday morning involved three vehicles: a trailer, a truck, and a third vehicle. 

Reports indicate that the accident occurred when the truck driver, en route to Mombasa, attempted to overtake another vehicle.

However, this attempt resulted in a head-on collision between the truck and a trailer heading to Nairobi.

Police officers promptly arrived at the scene, confirming the number of casualties and survivors in the incident.

According to a police report, the truck driver who was heading to Mombasa lost his life on the spot while two other drivers survived albeit with serious injuries.

The deceased's body has since been transferred to Kaambu mortuary.

Police have since launched investigations into the accident and warned drivers to exercise caution especially during the rainy season.

The Wednesday morning incident come a fortnight after five people lost their lives on the spot in a similar accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The October 18 accident occurred after a bus collided with a truck resulting into the 5 deaths and left scores injured. 

Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander Maina confirmed to the press that the crash occurred between the towns of Machinery and Kambu in Makueni along the busy highway.

During the accident, a bus and public service vehicle were badly damaged while a trailer overturned at the scene of the crash.

Latest statistics published by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), show that 2,124 people lost their lives to road carnage between January and June this year.

The authority attributes the accident to various factors including careless driving and drunk driving for the increase in the accidents.

NTSA's statistics further show that pedestrians have been the biggest casualties with 571 of them losing their lives followed by motorcycle operators at 449.
