A trader in Vihiga was beaten and robbed of Ksh 100,000 together with his phone while trying to rescue his sister at a police station.
The victim claimed that he rushed to Cheptulu Police Station shortly after learning that his sister had been arrested and thus sought to know the charges pressed against her.
“On just inquiring, I was beaten by those people purporting to be police officers in civilians and driving private vehicles,” he alleged while speaking with the media on Thursday.
The incident not only left him shaken but also saw him incur crucial injuries in his eyes, head and stomach.
He was then ransked, with the officers clearing his pockets and allegedly stealing Ksh100,000 together with his phone.
The officers were further accused of attacking the man on the pretense of conducting investigations into his sister's arrest.
Shortly after, he was handed his phone only and released from the station. However, he declined to leave without his money.
“I asked how can I take back my phone without the money,” the victim lamented.
A scuffle ensued between the officers and the victim, with the police questioning the source of the funds.
Frustrated by the ordeal, the man walked away dejected and wondering why the officers assaulted him rather than listening to his case.
He now wants Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to look into the matter and ensure that rogue police officers are restrained.
Human rights activists were also urged to intervene and assist the victim in recovering his money. Police have yet to respond to the victim's accusations.
