Officers drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a manhunt for a former General Service Unit (GSU) police officer who fled a crime scene, leaving behind a wife and a Subaru car.
According to the DCI, the fake cop who was posing as a senior police officer fled after detectives caught wind of their activities.
The couple was masquerading as Crime Records Officers, pretending to be capable of processing police clearance certificates for unsuspecting 'clients.'
''KW, the blackguard ex-cop, sprinted into thin air, braving the evening shivers, leaving behind a wife and a Subaru car that police detained. Sleuths are sharpening their claws on him,'' DCI statement read.
The arrests happened last evening at the Maridadi area of Kwanza in Trans Nzoia county in a sting operation conducted by crime researchers and operations detectives.
According to the DCI, the lovers used about 11 subscriber sim cards to communicate and receive money from their targets, whom they issued with fake certificates at a Ksh3,000 fee.
''Notably, the certificates either bore forged signatures or those lifted from previous office holders who are long retired,'' DCI statement read in part.
The DCI further noted that it had deployed more staff at the Forensic Fingerprint Identification Bureau (FFID) to various branches.
Deployment of the officers was aimed at fast-tracking the processing of police clearance applications and further minimising the waiting time.
The manhunt comes against the backdrop of the recent arrest of six people caught selling fake Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam papers.
In a statement dated November 6, the DCI revealed that it had nabbed the six accused of operating various Telegram accounts in an intensified crackdown designed to ensure the integrity of the ongoing examinations.
According to DCI, KNEC had raised the red flag about 32 platforms used by the suspects and their associates to sell fake exam papers.
