Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) called for a crisis meeting on Sunday to discuss the controversial Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results that have been marred with errors.

Reports indicated that the Council members were informed to attend the meeting at 10:00 am following a series of concerns raised by parents who questioned the credibility of the results.

KNEC had initially issued a statement explaining the errors including awarding candidates the wrong marks and assigning grades to subjects that the candidates did not sit for.

Other errors also include candidates in 1 school receiving similar scores in one subject while other candidates receive either extremely high or very low grades in subjects.

Various schools have drafted letters to the Council, directing the agency to address the massive anomalies witnessed across the country. Moi Kabarak Primary School in Nakuru County wrote a letter to KNEC, calling for a review of the school's results.

"We received the 2023 KCPE results after the communication by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education. However, as a school, we are not satisfied by the results since it does not reflect the ability of the majority of our learners by merit," the statement read in part.

"As such, we have appealed to KNEC for review of the same and hope that it will look into the matter and act expeditiously."

Candidates, who were aggrieved by the situation, noted that the errors could hamper their chances of joining the top secondary schools in the country.

"They have killed my dream. I wanted to go to Mary Hill School and the marks I've gotten don't even come close," a teary candidate spoke to the media.

"I've been overwhelmed by a lot of sadness and depression. Since I joined this school, I've never gotten such results," another student lamented.

The meeting comes hours after KNEC released a statement, attributing the errors to a configuration hitch on the SMS code. The Council, however, assured students that the results on the portal were accurate.

Further, KNEC advised candidates who had concerns regarding the results to lodge an appeal within 30 days from the date of the release of the exam results.
