Nuru Maloba Okanga was on Thursday, November 30, arraigned before the Milimani Law Court after he was arrested on Wednesday.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) diehard was charged with spreading false information on a YouTube channel, according to documents accessed by Kenyans.co.ke.
According to the charge sheet, Okanga shared the information on November 20, targeting President William Ruto.
"On November 20, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, jointly with others not before court using a YouTube account published online a video with intimidating and abusive words.
"Information you knew to be false and calculated to discredit the reputation of a state officer and a which intend to provoke a breach of the peace," read part of the sheet.
The aspiring politician was accused of breaching the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018, which states that anyone found guilty of spreading false information online is liable to a fine of Ksh5 million, imprisonment of five years, or both.
In the said video, Okanga was heard issuing threats to the President and some of his allies.
Okanga complained that the current government was undermining the opposition and demanded it respects ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
In the 9-minute video, he also castigated the Kenya Kwanza regime, leading to his current predicament.
Meanwhile, during his arrest, his wife revealed that officers raided his house and demanded access to his phone without court orders.
"I threw his phone under the mattress to prevent them from getting a hold of it. However when they called him, the phone rang under the bed and they reached for it," she narrated.
The wife called for the release of her husband, asking police officers to be humane during arrests. She also argued that they confiscated her phone and Okanga's before they bundled him into the boot of their vehicle.
To compound the situation, Okanga was unreachable via phone, prompting the family to worry about his safety and well-being.
"If someone has broken the law, tell them their charges and arrest them with dignity. I don't even know where he is being held," she stated.
