A Kibera hotelier elicited debate among Kenyans after he was filmed charging a French Youtuber Kino Yves, Ksh800 for a plate of Ugali.
In the video uploaded on the Vlogger's channel on December 3, Yves was in Kibera exploring the slum and showcasing his tour of Kenya.
For his lunch break, he decided to visit a hotel after buying fish and kachumbari from a nearby vendor. He then asked the hotelier if he could be served with Ugali, one of the locals' favourite delicacies.
Yves also ordered matumbo, which was being prepared on a pan next to him, in the kibandaski.
Upon finishing the food and asking for his bill, Yves was told to pay Ksh1,000 with Ksh200 for the matumbo and Ksh800 for the ugali.
"I will give you Ksh500 because I think you are overpriced. The ugali is not Ksh800," the YouTuber, however, argued.
"Just top with Ksh200," the hotelier insisted as the Yves obliged his demands.
After the video was shared online, a section of Kenyans expressed displeasure, with a section opining that such acts would discourage potential tourists from visiting the country.
Another section also wondered why the food vendor overpriced the ugali, yet the YouTuber had even shared his meal with some of his staff.
Other Kenyans also noted that Yves would have marketed the open-air restaurant if they had served him well.
"It is unfortunate that that ugali guy decided to be shortsighted and overcharge you. You paid 10 times for a piece of ugali and they ate a large piece of your fish and kachumbari. He's a disgrace!"One concerned woman commented.
"Such people should be punished for such acts. It's very shameful and embarrassing for us Kenyans. Notably, even the lady you had lunch with and the others that were around did not try to tell this guy whatever he was doing was wrong. Shame on him," another tweep added.
