Kenya Power has issued a statement explaining that the nationwide power blackout that paralysed businesses was caused by a faulty system.
The notice, which was sent out roughly 30 minutes after the power outage was reported countrywide, also indicated that the utility company was working to restore normalcy.
"We have lost electricity supply to various parts of the country due to a suspected fault affecting the power system," read the statement in part.
"We are working to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible. An update on the restoration progress will be issued in due course."
Kenya Power, which trades as KPLC on the Nairobi Stock Exchange, therefore issued an apology to its customers.
The outage marked the third widespread blackout in the country this year alone, attracting backlash from the public over the utility firm's handling of the recurring problem.
Kenyans called out Energy CS Davis Chirchir and Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror demanding that they be held accountable over the rising cases of countrywide blackouts.
''The frequent power outages in this country is a typical sign of underground nocturnal cabal activities. It is not a usual occurrence, neither is it by accident but by design. I dare say it is time for Davis Chirchir to leave Nairobi and retire in Kericho County,'' lamented Saboti MP Caleb Amisi.
The outage also affected Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) which suffered its third outage since August this year.
A source familiar with the matter confided to Kenyans.co.ke that the power blackout that lasted for 15 minutes only affected two terminals.
"It is a national blackout but did not affect the entire airport. It only affected Terminal 1A and Terminal 1E," the source explained.
"That was sorted and the power was restored. The other parts of the airport were not affected. The power was out for about 15 minutes."
The Ministry of Energy is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
