Njeri Maina joined the list of victors, including EALA MP Kanini Kega who emerged as the winner in Golf.

Despite beginning the race second after her competitors, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri Maina stormed into victory in the East Africa Community (EAC) 200-metre competition, bagging silver for Kenya.

Njeri overtook an athlete who was nearly cruising to second and believed she would have emerged the victor had she reacted well to the sound of the starting gun.

However, she was still proud of raising the bar higher and placing Kenyan parliamentarians on the global map in this year's edition held in Rwanda.

"We may not be professional athletes, but we are trying to maintain the good name the likes Faith Kipyegon & Eliud Kipchoge have earned for Kenya," the legislators told Kenyans.co.ke, adding that she was inspired by the veterans.

Her compatriots also lauded her for leading by example after she was appointed as the vice-captain of the athletics team.

While celebrating her victory in a short dance with her colleagues, Njeri added that Kenyan MPs were flying high in various categories in the games that began scheduled to end on Monday, December 18.

Njeri's win closely follows Kenya's volleyball team's victory against Uganda. The Kenyan team battered their neighbours 3-0, winning all seats in what they argued was a landslide victory.

EALA MP Kanini Kega emerged as the winner in Golf and also won Men's 100-meter races, marking his second victory in the category following last year's triumph.

Kenya's National Assembly football team won their opening competition, beating the East Africa legislative assembly 5-0.

Nyali MP Mohammed Ali scored a brace while Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho) and Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau were also on the scoresheet.

The opening ceremony of the 13th Inter-Parliamentary Games kicked off at Kigali Pele Stadium on December 8, 2023, with football, among other activities.

Over 900 national and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MPs also competed in walking-race, netball, golf, athletics, tug-of-war, darts, and volleyball.  Athletics featured races in 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800, and 1500 meters, respectively, for men and women.
