Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled recommendations of a Multi-Sectoral Technical Committee which was investigating the management of international airports in the country.
In a statement dated Thursday, the CS noted that the team had proposed changes aimed at enhancing better management of the airports including the hiring of more staff at the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).
Murkomen noted that the move will allow for better management of airports that have been marred with controversy, especially the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport(JKIA).
Additionally, the committee also proposed for KAA staff to sign performance contracts to enhance efficiency and professionalism.
"KAA has been struggling with a disorganised and demoralised workforce with no clearly defined roles and succession plan," read the statement in part.
"We must insist on KAA embracing a maintenance culture and compliance with international standards and best practices."
The team also recommended for rehabilitation of access roads next to the airports in addition to the construction of more parking spaces at the airports.
Murkomen also detailed that the committee also proposed for rehabilitation of runways that have been marred with defects and structural failures.
"Others are improving airside and landside drainage systems and better managing overgrown vegetation and landscaped areas, strengthening luggage handling systems and passenger boarding bridges.
"Proposals also include modernising firefighting systems and improving security systems through fencing and screening," Murkomen stated.
Meanwhile, he noted that various rehabilitation works had begun at JKIA including revamping electro-mechanical systems, including installing new standby generators.
Replacement of leaking roofs at JKIA terminals is also set to be undertaken in due course.
According to the CS implementation of the changes yet to be effected will commence in 2024.
