47 passengers sustained injuries when a bus they were travelling in veered off a highway in Londiani and landed in a ditch.

A statement by the Kenya Red Cross on Friday indicated that the incident occurred at around 8:00 am in the morning.

Officers from the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) rushed to the scene of the accident and took the injured to Fort Tenan Sub-County Hospital. They worked in partnership with Kericho County Government.

"Forty-seven injured individuals have been swiftly taken to Fort Tenan Sub County Hospital by the County Government," read the statement by Kenya Red Cross.

"Additionally, seven people escaped unharmed. The scene has been cleared by the Kenya Police."

The accident occurred along Londiani - Muhoroni Road in Kericho County.

The crash comes a week after another 62-seater bus was involved in a road accident at the same spot leading to 40 injuries.

"40 casualties evacuated to Fort Tenarn Hospital; 4 referred to Kericho County Referral Hospital by County ambulance and well-wishers," a statement from the Red Cross stated at the time.

The tragic accident happened close to six months after 52 people lost their lives on the same spot.

During the fatal accident that happened on July 1, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured Kenyans that no such tragedy would be witnessed on the busy highway again.

Earlier this month, the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome issued a travel advisory to both motorists and their passengers noting that 16 people lost their lives in the past week alone.

"The National Police Service has the mandate to enforce traffic laws. However, I wish to emphasise that road safety is our collective responsibility as Kenyans. We must change our behaviour on the roads," Koome explained.

"Therefore, I am appealing to pedestrians, cyclists, boda boda riders, passengers, and drivers to adhere to traffic rules so that we make this festive season safe for all of us."
