Residents of Buruburu Phase 5 Estate in Nairobi County woke up to the sound of gunshots on Sunday after which they discovered 4 people had lost their lives.
According to the locals, the incident occurred minutes before 3 am when the four men were gunned down and their vehicle sprayed with bullets. A second vehicle belonging to a resident was also damaged leaving him to bear the cost.
"At around 2.30 am, I received a call and I was told that my car had been shot at. I went to inspect and saw it had been damaged by bullets," the owner stated.
The early morning shootout occurred near Buruburu Police Station. Reports indicate that the shootout was initiated by unidentified gunmen.
Reportedly, the deceased were travelling in a Suzuki Swift when they were followed by armed men in a Toyota Prado who opened fire.
Police have since launched investigations into the matter. The officers also recovered an identity card and two daggers from the vehicle belonging to the deceased.
Following the incident, the bodies were transferred to City Mortuary pending identification.
Before police arrived at the scene, locals crowded the area to find out what had transpired. At this point, they found the bodies sprawled on the ground near the car, lying in pools of blood.
In what represented the gorry nature of the crime, the driver was fatally shot in his seat leading to his upper body falling onto the passenger seat. The man in the front passenger seat appeared to have attempted to escape before he was shot in the head.
The others who also seemed to have attempted to flee were shot. Their bodies were discovered lying next to each other near the vehicle with the doors wide open.
As they stood waiting for the police to arrive, the witnesses blocked anyone attempting to interfere with the scene especially those who appeared to harbour intentions of collecting items from the car and getting into contact with the bodies.
However, a section of Kenyans were angered by the slow pace the police dealt with the matter questioning why the bodies were still at the scene hours after the shooting.
