The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of the Mombasa Road at the Imaara Mall (Tuff Steel) Junction between Monday, December 25 at 9 pm to Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 4 am.
In a statement, the authority stated the Mombasa-bound lanes of the carriageway will be affected by the disruption.
KeNHA further stated that only 2 of the 4 lanes of the Mombasa-bound carriageway will be closed to minimise disruption of traffic along the highway.
The roads agency revealed that the closure has been informed by the need to pave the way for the extraction and installation of a cross culvert.
KeNHA urged motorists to use the 2 open lanes and to comply with the guidelines issued to navigate the section.
The agency also requested motorists to approach the section with caution throughout its closure.
The installation of a cross culvert is meant to improve the drainage in the area and reduce flooding on the road.
In the recent past, the Imaara Daima area has witnessed heavy flooding, rendering the section of the road impassable.
On Thursday, 14th December heavy rains pounded Nairobi after a break from the El-Nino rains which have been experienced in several parts of the country.
Owing to these rains, the section was heavily flooded forcing motorists and pedestrians to seek shelter or adopt alternative routes.
This comes after several calls from the public for action by the government to mitigate the flooding crisis along areas of Mombasa Road.
Residents of the area have been experiencing frequent transport paralysis caused by the heavy flooding in the area.
