Motorists plying the Nairobi Nakuru Highway were on Monday night stranded in a traffic snarl-up for hours following an accident that occurred earlier in the day.
According to multiple reports, the gridlock was caused by a head-on collision involving two lorries a few metres from Kinungi. No fatalities were reported in the road carnage.
Frustrated drivers, thereafter, shared their plight online, bemoaning the gridlock, which was further compounded by overlapping motorists.
"I have been here from 6.50 pm to 9.35 pm, but is mostly due to rogue drivers," one motorist lamented.
One of the drivers pointed out the damages careless overlapping can cause to the vehicle, including damaged bumpers, scratches on the sides, cracked lights, and broken side mirrors, among others.
Motorists were urged to seek alternative routes to avoid worsening the traffic snarl-ups occasioned by Kenyans rushing to the city from up country.
A section of Kenyans called upon the Ministry of Transport to initiate the construction of dual carriage on the road to avoid such accidents and unnecessary traffic jams.
Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was urged to implement safer measures on the road after several people lost their lives during the festive season.
Meanwhile, before the Christmas celebrations, hundreds of motorists were also stuck on the highway on their way to different destinations.
Some of the motorists piled pressure on CS Murkomen to expand the road and improve alternative routes.
The Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) was forced to deploy officials to man the road and ensure smooth traffic after the snarl-up extended for two days.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who was among the stranded road users, revealed that the government planned to construct a dual carriageway from Nairobi to Mau Summit Junction.
