Mitchele Awour scored 402 marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and is looking for well-wishers to fund her secondary education.
According to the pupil, her parents do not have the means to pay for her school fees as her father is physically disabled following an accident while the mother is a housewife.
"I am appealing to any wellwisher to help me fulfill my dream of becoming a journalist," she stated.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Sunday, her father Bernard Okach, revealed that efforts to apply for scholarships have been futile leaving them in a dilemma.
His only hope was a bursary he is set to apply for in the coming week. His daughter is expected to join Lugulu Girls' High School in Bungoma County.
"I got into an accident and I am grounded for now, my wife does odd jobs but we cannot afford her school fees," he stated.
According to Okach, the school fee is estimated at 53,554 and the family is seeking assistance from well-wishers.
Okach narrated the struggle her daughter went through in a local primary school to complete her education and managed to score high marks only for her to risk not joining high school.
Luckily, lawyer Silas Jakakimba has pledged to support her through his foundation. Additionally, Siaya Governor James Orengo has directed the CECM for Education to handle the matter with urgency.
Following the release of the 2023 results, students from needy families have appealed for help as the cost of education continues to soar. A boy from Kakamega County who scored 412 marks also took to social media for help.
In December Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu warned all school principals against increasing fees for high school learners. He stated that this was a measure to protect parents facing financial constraints.
"Parents are undergoing difficult financial challenges. Unless there is express approval from my office, no fee increase should happen," he remarked.
