Several people were injured on Tuesday morning after a bus overturned at the entrance of the Nairobi Expressway in Mlolongo.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to the media revealed that the bus, belonging to SEMA Sacco, was en route to Nairobi from Mutomo in Kitui County before veering off the road.

The locals suspected that the driver lost control of the vehicle as it crashed into the concrete grills near the expressway before overturning.

Nearby residents gathered at the scene to rescue the passengers who were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. At the time of publishing this article, no deaths were reported.

Meanwhile, police officers rushed to the scene to manage traffic flow and prevent a snarl-up from occurring.

The officers also documented the scene and towed the vehicle to the station before launching investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

They further appealed to motorists to adhere to traffic rules to avoid such accidents from happening in the future.

According to the latest data by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 84 fatalities were recorded in the first week of January 2024, 12 more than the 72 deaths recorded in the same period last year.

Among the 84 fatalities, pedestrians were the most affected with 31, followed by motorcyclists (23) and drivers (7).

Further, 508 road accidents were reported during the period, with the majority categorised as sustaining dire injuries (234), followed by those nursing slight injuries (190).

NTSA has since initiated a campaign titled #DereSmart to appeal to motorists to adhere to stipulated traffic rules.
